📖 How It Works

This estimator uses a three-factor model to calculate realistic AC repair cost ranges:

  1. Base repair cost : Each repair type has a standard parts + labor range derived from national HVAC industry data (HomeAdvisor, Angi, and contractor surveys).
  2. Unit size multiplier : Larger systems (measured in tons of cooling capacity) require more refrigerant, larger parts, and more labor time. A 5-ton unit can cost 30-50% more than a 1.5-ton system for the same repair.
  3. Age & region adjustment : Older units often need harder-to-source parts (+10-25%). Labor rates vary significantly by region : major metro areas typically run 20-35% higher than rural markets.

The formula is: Final Estimate = Base Cost × Size Multiplier × Age Factor × Region Factor

All figures represent contractor costs including parts and labor. DIY repairs (where safe) can reduce costs by 40-60%, but HVAC work involving refrigerants legally requires EPA 608 certification.
