How It Works
This calculator uses standard legal deadline rules based on the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) and common state court practices.
Step 1: Enter the date of the triggering event (service of process, filing, or notice).
Step 2: Select the method of service. Extra days are added automatically: personal (0), mail (+3), overnight/email/fax (+1).
Step 3: Enter the response period in days (e.g., 30 days for a summons, 21 days for a motion to dismiss).
Step 4: Choose calendar days (count all days) or business days (exclude weekends and federal holidays).
Formula: Deadline = Event Date + Extra Service Days + Response Period (adjusted for weekends/holidays if business day mode).
Federal holidays observed: New Year's Day, MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas.
