How It Works

Step 1: Calculate Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). Your gross income plus any other taxable income you enter gives us your combined gross income figure.

Step 2: Apply the Deduction. We subtract either the 2024 standard deduction for your filing status, or your itemized deduction amount (whichever you choose), to arrive at your taxable income.

Step 3: Apply Progressive Brackets. The U.S. federal tax system is progressive: income is taxed at increasing rates only for the portion that falls within each bracket. For example, if you are single and earn $50,000, only income above $47,150 is taxed at 22%.

Step 4: Sum the Brackets. Tax owed from each bracket is added together to produce your total estimated federal income tax.

2024 Standard Deductions: Single: $14,600 | Married Filing Jointly: $29,200 | Married Filing Separately: $14,600 | Head of Household: $21,900.

Note: This calculator estimates federal income tax only. It does not include state income tax, FICA (Social Security/Medicare), credits, AMT, or other adjustments. Consult a qualified tax professional for personalized advice.
