Marketing consultant vs agency: which one fits a service business

Owners type this when they are about to spend money and do not want to buy the wrong machine. Here is the plain split, then how Lucky Duck sits on the consultant side without pretending to be a 40-person shop.

Ask which side you are on

The short answer

A marketing consultant is usually one senior person (sometimes a tiny bench) who diagnoses and then does a focused slice of work. An agency is a team that sells channels: ads, content, design, account management. Consultants start faster and stay closer to the owner. Agencies cover more surface area and cost more to keep idle hands fed.

Public ranges you will see in 2026 writeups: consultants often land around three thousand to twelve thousand dollars a month, or a project fee. Agencies often land around five thousand to twenty-five thousand a month with longer contracts. Treat those as market gossip, not our price list. Your number depends on scope.

Agency default

  • Team, layers, onboarding weeks
  • Multi-channel retainer
  • You brief a manager
  • Output can outrun strategy

Consultant default

  • Direct access to the person thinking
  • One or two jobs done well
  • You can start in days
  • You still have to decide

Hire a consultant when

  • You can execute once someone names the move.
  • You need a specific skill: search pages, offer clarity, a leak in follow-up.
  • You want month-to-month honesty, not a 12-month package.
  • You are under the size where an agency’s overhead is the product.

Thunderstrike, Praxis, and other Tampa Bay shops make versions of this argument in public. The useful part is not their branding. It is the question: do you need a department, or do you need a decision?

Hire an agency when

  • You already have a strategy and need volume production: ads, video, always-on posts.
  • You have someone inside who can manage a team.
  • The work requires many specialists in the same week.
  • You accept a longer ramp and a higher floor cost.

If you do not have a strategy, an agency will invent activity. Activity feels like progress. It is not the same as customers who buy.

The hidden third option: you do not need either yet

Sometimes the site cannot convert. Sometimes the offer is mush. Sometimes nobody answers the phone in five minutes. Buying traffic into that system is lighting money on fire with extra reporting.

That is why we sell a free look harder than a package. For a service business, the consult is the product until the diagnosis is real. If we skip that, we become another vendor who needed your retainer more than you needed us.

Red ocean

People already searching “marketing consultant Tampa.” Easier to convert. Smaller pool. This page lives there on purpose.

Orange ocean

They know they have a problem. They need a mechanism, not another slogan.

Blue ocean

They do not know they have a leak. That is story and education. Different job than this comparison.

Our job on this URL

Help a ready buyer pick a shape. Then invite a conversation, not a 17-tab sales deck.

What Lucky Duck is, in this split

We sit on the consultant side. Clearwater base. Tampa Bay and beyond. We look at the whole operation, name the two or three levers, and build the first wedge when it is a page or a process we can actually ship.

We are not a full-service ad factory. We will not pretend a solo-style bench is a 750-person network. If you need that, we will say so and you can go hire it with your eyes open.

How we keep the comparison honest

  • No fake Semrush screenshots.
  • No invented case-study revenue.
  • No “best of Tampa” badge we did not earn on this page.
  • Metrics we have not measured stay labeled unknown.

Impressions that do not become customers do not count. That line is the whole argument against buying the larger machine first.

A simple decision test

  1. Can you name the job you want more of in one sentence?
  2. Does your current site say that sentence in the first screen?
  3. When a lead comes in, who answers, and how fast?
  4. Do you need more volume, or do you need the existing volume to stop leaking?

If you cannot answer those, start with a consultant. If you can answer them and you need a factory, start shopping agencies with a written brief so they cannot sell you a second strategy.
